What is this to do with end users or customers like me?
It is worth while to look at how affordable is the control panel of the web hosting companies. Why? In economical world generally, "prices are always reflected by costs." Business people can earn you more money but they cannot earn less or even not earn at all(meaning losing money)! Therefore it is wise for you to know a bit of costing of the web hosting companies have before you sign up with them.
One of the cost they have is the web hosting control panel, (that's why the article talks about "Affordable Web Hosting Control Panel" .) They do cost money and they are not free. Usually, the web hosting control panel are charged per user basis, like your MS office products. Web hosting companies have to buy licenses from those software, Although there are free or open source web hosting control panel available in the market, they however are lack of features compare those commercial ones. Now, there are probably 6-7 famous and usually provided by web hosting companies:
- Cpanel & WHM -- the most famous one
- Plesk 8.0
- Hsphere
- Direct Admin
- Helm and many more
How affordable are the web hosting control panels?
1.) Cpanel & WHM, this is the most famous or popular web hosting control panel, may be it's simple and easy to use. Some web hosting companies offer a 1-click application installation script called "Fantastico". Although Cpanel is easy to use, but they don't have built in billing system and support ticket system such as H-sphere. The license of Cpanel/WHM is from $48 - $95 depends on number of support ticket required from the provider or reseller.
2.)direct admin - much cheaper (or much more affordable) when compare to Cpanel (WHM), but they don't offer 1-click application installation like Cpanel or whm and they don't have billing and ticket support system as well.
3.)plesk 8.0 - I think is the most expensive (or the less affordable) one for all web hosting control panels around. They are prices on per domain basis. 30 domains, $29.99 per month - unlimited domain 69.99. While cPanel is counting on per server and one has to pay for support on PgSQL database, spam assassin (mail spam fighter! oh dear me!
4.) Hsphere - one stop billing, technical, control panel with support on multiple servers load balancing. It is quite a powerful control panel, but it is a bit hard to learn and get used to it because it has many functions built in. The pricing is charged as per account basis; $4.50 per account. Thus if a web hosting provider has 100 accounts using H-sphere, the cost will be, $450.
5.) Helm - $49 per month and it seems to me it only supports Windows. They have intergrated billing, control panel, and technical support in their packages, the price actually is much more expensive than plesk and certainly the less affordable web hosting control panel among those which I have talked about.

To sum up, helm being the less "affordable web hosting control panels" among the competitors and perhaps, Cpanel is the most affordable hosting control panel.
Remember one thing to choose your hosting company, control panel does play important part in hosting nowadays, so for consumers like you're reading the page, the better you know about the costs of a hosting provider, more likely you'll find an affordable web hosting provider with good quality of support! That is for web hosting industry, the higher the costs of the web hosting control panels are, the more expensive their hosting plans will be.
